It was a dark and quiet night. Laurel looked out of her bedroom window. All she could see were the rows of street lights and the usual flickering of the candle of Mr Pickering's across the street. Laurel always wondered when the candle would catch the curtain and set alight, but didnt dare to say it. Mr Pickering was an odd fellow. Tall, broad shoulders yet skinny almost ghostly like. She knew his name but had never seen him before, only his shadow. He seemed to drift through the house and never go outside.
Laurel switched out her light and slipped off the windowsill back under her duvet and began counting the stars above her bed as she did every night but this time one of them began to twinkle. As she slipped into sleep a dream began. An eagle appeared calling out to her *save me* almost a beacon of hope a light beaming from a bright red jewel half burried in the dirt. She recognised the atmosphere it was the local park: Mullberry park just a five minute walk down the road.
[[wake up time]]Laurel woke up at 7am sharp confused. For some reason she rememebered this dream, she nevered remembered dreams. As she opened her eyes one thought remained: Mullberry park. She took a hot shower and put on her running gear. She waved goodbye to her mum and took off down the road. She had to get there to see whether it was just a dream. She pushed open the gate and ran towards the oak tree near the lake. It was just next to the long route veering to the left. She knelt on the floor and burrowed through the dirt with her bare hands. There it was, the glistening red jewel. Laurel picked it up with a handkerchief and dusted it off. It was beautiful. The jewel feflected a beam of light so maginificently. She covered it back up in her handkerchief and slippped it into her pocket and ran home.
[[continue|the unveiling]]Laurel ran up to her bedroom and ran the jewel under the sink.As soon as she touched the jewel she got a flash into the future: A magestic pearl grey gull flying around a stage with glitter, sparkling lights and shimmer. dancers dressed in green, yellow and gold. She recognised that these were carnival colours. She put the jewel down and stepped away for a moment. She thought they were magnificent.
[[the call]]Laurel's phone began to ring. She recognised the number. It was her grandma "hello dear i have a little present for you. Come by my house in about half an hour would you?"
"of couse grandma, see you later!" Laurel replied. She slipped the red jewel into her top draw by the side of her bed and packed a bag to go see her grandma. She walked to her local bus stop and hopped on to the 52 into Masham. She went down a small alley and opened the gate into her grandmas front garden and rung the bell. Laurel's grandma was a petit woman with curly grey hair and a large smile "come on in here darling" she said. They wandered into the kitchen where there was a large dusty box. "I think you might want this" she said and handed the box to Laurel.
[[the box]]She careful sliced the tape across the top of the box and slid open the flaps. Laurel didnt know what was inside, maybe it was some old photos, thats what grandma usually gave to her. She slowly crept her hands inside and felt the cold smooth surface of something. it was hard and felt round. She carefully grabbed it and gently pulled it out of the box. It was a gold band with small indents in the top and a hole in the front. It seemed to have something missing, maybe a large jewel. It hit Laurel. It was her red jewel. It was of a similar size and width. She turned to her grandma and gazed into her eyes but all her grandma gave back was a sorrowful look. "You had best run along now dear, put it back in the box and take it with you, your mother will be waiting." Laurel kissed her grandma on the cheek and left heading towards the 52 bus with many questions in her head *why did her grandma have it? How did she know?*
[[home sweet home]]Laurel got home at 4pm and was quite peckish. She opened the fridge and grabbed an apple and a scotch egg. She briskly walked up the stairs. Her mum had gone to work so she was home alone. Laurel took the jewel out of the top draw beside her bed and took out the artefact her grandma had given her. she examined it closely and it looked to be some sort of headpiece. A carnival headpiece. there were stones of every colour along the strip and the back was inscribed with *quia animalis larum, spiritus locutus est ignis aere* She had no clue what this meant. Laurel realised it was a language and decided to search it on the internet: Latin. It translated to: *For animal seagull, breath fire speak air* At this moment she thought about Mr pickering's candle and his shadowy figure. She knew what she had to do.
[[the ceremony]]Laurel took out a candle and a jar. She placed the candle inside the jar and put the jar inside the headpiece. She lit the candle and placed the jewel over the flame heating it. Flaming rainbows danced around the room. the jewel softened and laurel began chanting the words enscribed. She placed the red jewel into the gap and blew out the flame simultaneously. a bird began to appear like a ghostly figure out of the smoke from the candle. The ghostly bird became more visible every second almost becoming real until a flash of light and a magestic pearl grey gull appeared squawking at laurel. It kept tapping the headpiece with its beak. Laurel knew it was trying to tell her something. She put it on. it was a perfect fit. She heard a voice. It was the gull she could understand it! "compete, run, fly free Laurel. Fly, show them, become the carnival queen" Laurel took the headpiece off and dropped to the ground
[[awakening|bad news]]Laurel's phone rang it was an unknown number. Laurel answered "hello?"
The man replied "Is this Laurel Attkins? This is Morgan jefferson here."
Laurel thught she had heard that name before but couldn't remember where. "it is."
Morgan Jefferson replied "Im from the funeral service. Im sorry to say your grandma Julie has passed away. I'm so sorry for your loss." Laurel hung up she couldn't take the news. she threw her phone onto her bed. She couldn't take this news. she had just seen her grandma just a few hours ago looking fit and healthy. she flopped onto her bed and cried into her pillow. All the memories of her grandma came flooding in, all the times they had cups of tea on the front lawn, the walks along the beach and the strolls around town visiting the sweet shop to get humbugs once a month. These were the memories Laurel treasured and it made her cry even more.
A few days later the funeral rolled around. Laurel put on her silk black dress with a satin bow across the front. She put on her school shoes that had been polished by her father the night before and added a touch of makeup. She applied some rosey pink lipgloss and put on her black hat. She was dressed to go but she wasn't ready. Her mind was still somewhere else. She got into her father's car and drove to Samchurch Graveyard for her grandma's service.
It lasted an hour. By the end her mascara all down her face. An old man offered her a tissue and she kissed her grandma on the head one last time. She couldn't say goodbye it was too hard. Her throat clenched. She couldn't speak words could not describe how much it hurt.
[[ the surprise ]]As laurel was leaving a piece of paper landed at her feet. It was a poster for a competition: *The queen of the carnival head of the town, the most georgous girl in the most perfect outfit will parade through the streets of london.* Laurel remembered the headpiece her grandma had given her. This is destiny she thought. Laurel got back into her father's car and headed home. She put the headpiece on and the pearl grey seagull appeared. he was magnificent. Laurel began to see all the scenery again of the stage the dancers the show and the crowd. She knew what she had to do.
[[the audition]]Laurel ran to her mother downstairs. "mum there is an audition tomorrow. I really need a dress. I want to Audition" Her mum nodded and gave her £40. "This is all i have. Buy some fabric and make it yourself I know you can." Laurel walked into town and found the fabric shop. She asked the lady about fabrics for a costume. The lady went into the backroom and brought out some vibarant orange, green and yellow fabric. Perfect. Laurel ran back home and began to google carnival dresses. She soon had an idea of what she wanted to create and set to work.
[[showtime]]The day rolled around of the competition. Laurel put on her dress and her headpiece she was ready for the audition. She ran to the car and her father drove her to the local town hall where the competitions were being held. She felt amazing and confident. The pearl grey seagull sat on her shoulder watching over her like a guardian angel, whispering: *winner*.
It was Laurel's turn to preform she wasnt really sure what to do she swaed her hips and strolled across the stage. It felt so... natural. Around of applause was heard from the pannel of judges, a roar of approval. She had done it.
[[destiny sealed]]Laurel's phone rang later that day. She knew who it was. Destiny. It was either going to be a winner or a disaster. she nervously answered "hello?'
"Hello, this is Keith Lineyard from the carnival, I have heard about your audition Laurel"
"All good things I hope sir"
"Most definitely Laurel, You will be the carnival queen! That's if you choose to accept this offer" Laurel knew she had a chance but this still made her excited and speechless. "Of course! Thank you for this opportunity, I wont let you down!"
Laurel was ready she was going to do grandma proud.
[[The carnival]]A few weeks later the carnival rolled around. Laurel got into a taxi with her mother and father and travelled down to London. It was beatiful. Laurel had never seen antything like it. It was breathtaking. The taxi driver dropped them off at the Big Ben where they met with the rest of the carnival management. Laurel was escorted to The great western road. Laurel went into a portable cabin and put on her costume and looked in the mirror. She smiled. Destiny had called her and she was in the right place. *this is for grandma* she thought.
A lady wearing dungarees came in and did Laurel's makeup. She looked perfect. She put on the headpiece and her heels and was ready to go.
[[stunner]]The streets were crowded with people cheering. Laurel waved at the crowd as she was put on a float. This was awesome she felt uplifted and all her worries disappeared. After the parade through the streets she went up on stage and got a bunch of flowers and a pin badge:*carnival queen* Her trusty friend the pearl grey gull was perched on her shoukder. She pet him and fluffed his soft feathers. This is what she wanted to do:become the queen of the carnival.
